New Article: ‘Such a Film Might Come within the Ambit of Security Censorship’: – New Evidence about the Wartime Censorship of Love on the Dole (1940-1941)*

This article publishes some previously missed evidence from 1940 -1941 about the differing wartime perspectives of the BBFC (the British Board of Film Censors) and the MOI (the Ministry of Information) on a prospective film of Love on the Dole, which the censors had delayed since 1936. The story is more complicated than previous accounts suggest, with disagreement between the two agencies persisting right through the actual shooting of the picture. It was also a story of film censorship which was aired in public to a greater degree than was usual at this time, including in the House of Commons.
