This is an article comparing Orwell’s account of being Down and Out in Paris and London in his first published book with Greenwood’s shorter report on being down and out in London in his 1939 documentary book, How the Other Man Lives. I thought it would be a short article when I started, but it grew! There turned out to be quite a lot to say about how Orwell and Greenwood wrote about the conditions of those who were down and out and how they drew on their own experiences.
