Believe it or not, there really were a set of reviews of the play of Love on the Dole which included cartoon or caricature responses to the play by cartoonists who went to see the play together with theatre critics who wrote more conventional reviews. We have examples of the illustrated reviews from the Bystander, Punch and the Tatler, featuring a joint total of eleven graphic responses to Greenwood and Gow’s play about the Depression. These ‘cartoon’ reviews, all by celebrated cartoonists (Rouson, G.L. Stampa and Tom Titt) have been completely forgotten, but I think are well worth reviving.
