I’ve been doing some new work on Walter’s biography recently and have added some items to his biographical timeline which might be of interest – these include reports of the night burglars hid in the Garrick Theatre at the end of a performance of Love on the Dole in 1935 and tried to steal the night’s (substantial) box-office takings from the theatre safes, the damage done during the 1941 London Blitz to WG’s and Pearl’s Ebury Street studio flat (and much more importantly to Pearl herself), and what may be WG’s last (and cheerfully eccentric) newspaper interview in 1972, when he explained that he was still wearing every day some very good shirts he bought in 1945 and advised chewing a dandelion leaf to keep healthy!
