New Item: What Happens in Love on the Dole – Plot Summaries and Other Useful Devices

I usually set out on this site to write new and (I hope) intriguing pieces on Walter Greenwood, his work, contemporaries, and context. As a starting principle the majority of this work is intended to be research which is original, significant and rigorous.

The ambitions of this new piece are more modest: it is meant simply to be helpful. I have noticed that visitors quite often search for a plot summary of Love on the Dole, and up till now will have found nothing relevant. I now offer a useful pre-existing story summary of the play version from 1934, a (critical) guide to existing plot summaries on the web (many not very reliable) , and my own freshly-written plot summaries of the novel, the play and the film. They each need a separate plot summary because the three versions include/exclude different events and also at times present events in a different order.

So, this is not original research (and hence no asterisk), but I hope it will meet a need for those seeking a plot summary of Walter Greenwood’s Love on the Dole (1933, 1935 and 1941 versions).

Enjoy, Chris.
