New Article: Walter Greenwood’s First Press Interview: ‘Idle Days Turned to Money’! (Manchester Evening News, 1933)

This is surely the most unflattering headline Greenwood ever appeared under – and the sub-headline was not much better: ‘Unemployed Man Writes Book’. However, the article gets better as it goes on, and Greenwood was allowed to tell his own story as an unemployed man who had become a writer in his own words. It was his first chance to make a case for himself as a writer and for the entrapped situation and sufferings of those on the dole in the early thirties who had little prospect of any improvement in their circumstances.
