Greenwood wrote in his memoir (There was a Time, 1967, p. 249) that 1933 was to be ‘a wonderful year’ after Cape accepted his novel for publication. What he did not then know was that 1934 was to be a worthy sequel, with the success of his co-written play version of his first novel, and the acceptance and publication by Cape of his second novel. This letter from Greenwood to a friend (?) called Percival casts new light on what Greenwood was experiencing in 1934, and what publishers and their readers were doing to help him.
